What happens when one of the most promising college football quarterbacks in the country says he doesn’t want to play in the NFL? That was the question on the minds of many when Mitchell Trubisky decided to forego his senior year of college and enter the NFL draft after barely missing out on the Heisman Trophy and a shot at a national championship.
To say that Mitchell Trubisky was overjoyed to receive the Offensive Player of the Year honors for the National Football League is a bit of an understatement. “I was honestly speechless,” Trubisky said. “It was kind of weird, kind of surreal. I couldn’t even believe it.” Trubisky was selected as the second-ranked quarterback in the NFL by his peers for the 2017 season, but his award was given to him in the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) Awards ceremony. The Chicago Bears signal-caller was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year, while Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints took home the Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Trubisky’s response to the National Player of the Year award was a nice one: he thanked “the guys in the locker room” for supporting him and offered his thanks to his teammates who “didn’t give up on me” during his struggles. But, he still took time to acknowledge his coaches and family as well. As you can see from the video, he was also ready to thank his high school coach, who he said helped shed light on his “right path”.
Mitchell Trubisky’s NFL career has been intriguing to say the least.
Trubisky, who was chosen No. 2 overall in 2017 to be the Chicago Bears’ franchise quarterback, had a couple up-and-down seasons. With Trubisky as quarterback, the Bears reached the playoffs twice, but both times they were eliminated in the Wild-Card Round. Trubisky was demoted to a backup position with the Buffalo Bills when Justin Fields was named the new starting quarterback in Chicago.
Despite failing to secure a second contract with the Bears last season, Trubisky did manage to collect a trophy during his last game with the team. He’s proven to be a good sport about a prize.
Mitchell Trubisky discusses receiving the Nickelodeon Most Valuable Player award.
For the first time in NFL history, the league teamed up with Nickelodeon to broadcast last year’s Bears-Saints playoff game in a kid-friendly format. Slime was blasted out of virtual cannons in the game’s TV broadcast, which included appearances from famous Nickelodeon characters.
For someone who is accustomed to watching normal football, it was a crazy experience. The spectacle, on the other hand, was likely enjoyed by children who were being exposed to the sport for the first time. A number of NFL fans took to social media to share their delight with the show.
As the game drew to a conclusion, it was announced that a “NVP” would be given out. The “Nickelodeon Valuable Player” is a fan-voted honor given to a player.
Despite the Bears’ 21-9 loss to the Saints, Trubisky received the honor. As absurd as the situation may have seemed to Trubisky (particularly after losing the game and missing a chance at a second deal with Chicago), the experienced quarterback was a good sport.
Mitchell Trubisky proudly displayed the National Player of the Year award on his mantle.
Trubisky discussed receiving the NVP award on an episode of “Pardon My Take,” and how he was shocked to discover that it was a real-life trophy.
For what it’s worth, most NFL fans watching the game were likewise shocked to hear that the losing quarterback would get a bright orange Nickelodeon blimp.
Trubisky, despite all of this, has been a good sport about the situation. He said he displayed the trophy on his mantle because he loved the overall look. Trubisky has had a difficult few years. It’s wonderful to see him get an award that he may display in his home.

Trubisky used to think of himself as a franchise quarterback, but his current position isn’t nearly as glamorous. After signing a one-year contract with the Bills, he is Josh Allen’s backup this season.
Trubisky looked well in his preseason start against the Bears earlier this summer, for what it’s worth. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 228 yards and one score. Some speculated that Trubisky could land with a different club as a starter next year after such an outstanding performance.
Meanwhile, in 2024, Trubisky will concentrate on becoming the greatest backup he can be. If a club is willing to take a risk on the first-ever NVP next offseason, only time will tell.
